Eight Signs Your Business Website Needs a Redesign

Eight clear signs your business website is costing you customers — slow load, poor mobile experience, dated design, weak SEO, low conversions, security issues — and what to do about each.

A website quietly ages. It still loads, so it’s easy to ignore — but a dated, slow or hard-to-use site costs you customers every day without making a sound. Here are eight clear signs it’s time for a redesign, and what each one is really costing you.

1. It’s slow to load

Visitors leave sites that take more than a few seconds to load, and search engines rank slow sites lower. If your pages feel sluggish — especially on mobile data — you’re losing traffic and sales before anyone sees your offer. Modern builds load in under a second or two.

2. It doesn’t work well on phones

The majority of web traffic is mobile. If your site needs pinching and zooming, has tiny tap targets, or breaks on a phone, most of your visitors are having a poor experience. A redesign should be mobile-first, not mobile-afterthought.

3. It looks dated

Design is trust. If your site looks like it’s from a decade ago, visitors quietly assume the business is behind the times too. A current, professional look signals that you’re credible and worth contacting.

4. You can’t update it yourself

If changing a price, adding a page or posting news means emailing a developer and waiting, your site is a bottleneck. A modern build gives you an easy content-management system so your team can keep it fresh.

5. It gets little or no search traffic

If people can’t find you on Google or Bing, the site isn’t doing its main job. Old sites often have weak or missing SEO foundations — slow pages, poor structure, no metadata. A redesign done right bakes SEO in from the start.

6. It gets visitors but few enquiries or sales

Traffic without action is a conversion problem: unclear messaging, no obvious next step, a clunky contact form or checkout. If people arrive but don’t convert, the site needs to guide them — clear calls to action, a simple path, and trust signals.

7. It isn’t secure (or still on HTTP)

If your site shows “Not secure,” lacks HTTPS, or runs on outdated, unpatched software, it’s a risk to you and your visitors — and browsers and search engines penalise it. Security should be a baseline, not an upgrade.

8. It no longer reflects your business

Businesses evolve; websites often don’t. If your site shows old services, outdated pricing, the wrong audience or a brand you’ve moved on from, it’s working against you — confusing visitors and undermining trust.

Redesign, or start fresh?
Sometimes a refresh is enough; sometimes the foundations are too dated to build on and a clean rebuild is cheaper long-term. An honest partner will tell you which — and won’t sell you a rebuild you don’t need.
