SEO Basics Every Business Website Should Get Right
The SEO fundamentals that actually get businesses found — fast mobile-first pages, titles and descriptions, structure, content, structured data, indexing, local SEO and links.
You don’t need to be an SEO expert to get the basics right — and the basics are what get most businesses found. Fancy tactics rarely matter if the foundations are missing. Here are the fundamentals every business website should nail so Google and Bing can find, understand and rank it.
1. A fast, mobile-first site
Speed and mobile-friendliness are foundations, not extras. Search engines favour fast pages and rank mobile experiences first, and slow sites lose visitors before they read a word. If your site is sluggish or awkward on a phone, fix that before anything else — it’s the single biggest technical lever, and it’s built into every good modern website.
2. Clear page titles and descriptions
Every page needs a unique, descriptive title tag and meta description. The title is what shows in search results and browser tabs; the description is your ad copy underneath. Put the words people actually search for near the front, and make each page’s title genuinely different.
3. Sensible structure and URLs
Organise the site so both people and search engines understand it: clear navigation, logical sections, and readable URLs (/services/website-development, not /page?id=42). A clean structure spreads authority through the site and makes everything easier to find.
4. Content that answers real questions
Search engines rank pages that genuinely help. Write for the questions your customers actually ask — service pages that explain what you do, and articles (like this one) that answer common questions. Helpful, specific content beats keyword-stuffing every time.
5. On-page basics
- One clear H1 per page describing what it’s about.
- Descriptive headings (H2/H3) that structure the content.
- Alt text on meaningful images.
- Internal links between related pages, so search engines (and users) can travel through your site.
6. Structured data (schema)
Structured data (JSON-LD) tells search engines exactly what your pages are — your organisation, services, articles, FAQs and reviews. It can earn richer results (like FAQ dropdowns) and helps both search engines and AI assistants understand and cite you. It’s invisible to visitors but powerful for discovery.
7. Make sure you’re actually indexed
A great site earns nothing if search engines can’t crawl it. The essentials:
- An XML sitemap listing your pages.
- A sensible robots.txt that allows crawling (and blocks only private areas).
- Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and submit the sitemap.
- Be patient — new sites take time to be crawled and indexed, especially on Bing.
8. Local SEO, if you serve a place
If you serve customers in a specific area, claim your Google Business Profile, keep your name, address and phone consistent everywhere, and mention the places you serve on your pages. Local intent (“web design near me”) is some of the highest-converting traffic there is.
9. Links and reputation
Over time, links from other reputable sites and a consistent presence (directories, social profiles, mentions) build the authority that lifts rankings. You can’t fake this quickly, but you can earn it — with genuinely useful content and by being listed where your industry lives.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Duplicate or missing titles and descriptions across pages.
- Blocking your own site in robots.txt or leaving pages set to “noindex.”
- Slow, image-heavy pages that never got optimised.
- Thin content that says nothing a customer was searching for.
- Expecting results in days — SEO compounds over months.
