How Long Does It Take to Develop a Mobile Application?

How long mobile app development really takes — a realistic 8–20 week range, where the time goes phase by phase, what speeds it up or slows it down, and the app-store factor.

“How long will my app take?” is one of the first questions founders ask — and rightly so, because timeline drives cost, launch plans and funding. The honest answer is a range, but the range is knowable, and the things that speed it up or slow it down are predictable.

The short answer

Most mobile apps take 8 to 20 weeks from kickoff to launch. A focused MVP is typically 8–12 weeks; a feature-rich app with a complex backend and integrations runs 16–20 weeks or is phased. Very simple apps can be faster; large platforms take longer.

Where the time goes

  • Discovery (1–2 weeks): defining features, platforms and a release plan, and agreeing scope.
  • Design (1–2 weeks): app flows and UI, tested as a clickable prototype before any code.
  • Build (4–12 weeks): the app and its backend, developed in milestones with test builds you can install.
  • Testing & UAT (1–2 weeks): device testing, a beta (TestFlight / internal track) and your feedback.
  • Launch (a few days): App Store and Google Play submission and review.

What speeds it up — or slows it down

Speeds it up

  • A focused MVP scope with a clear core.
  • Cross-platform (React Native / Flutter) — one codebase for iOS and Android.
  • Content, brand assets and decisions ready on time.
  • Fast feedback and approvals from your side.

Slows it down

  • Many features, complex logic or real-time functionality.
  • Several third-party or backend integrations.
  • Native builds for each platform where they’re truly needed.
  • Scope changes mid-build, and slow approvals.
The app-store factor
Budget a few days for store review. Apple and Google review submissions, and occasionally ask for changes. A good partner prepares your listing and handles the review so this rarely delays launch — but it’s not instant.

Native or cross-platform affects timeline

Building natively for iOS and Android essentially means building twice, which adds time and cost. Cross-platform frameworks cover both from one codebase and are ideal for most apps — we recommend native only when performance or platform-specific features genuinely require it.

Want to launch sooner? Start with an MVP

The fastest route to a live app — and to real user feedback — is an MVP focused on the core experience, with a solid backend underneath so it can grow. You launch in weeks, learn, and build the rest from there. (More on this in our guide to MVP vs full product.)
